Current obstacles
- Relying on one disperserA single central server splits and sends out the data. Simpler, but it could censor or go down.
Physics limits
- Withholding data can't be provenIf a node refuses to serve data, a contract can't tell whether it withheld or the requester lied. So availability can't be enforced by slashing alone.
- Redundancy multiplies bytesCoding for recovery stores several times the original data. Operators' combined bandwidth and disks set a hard ceiling on total throughput.
How it works

Data cut into coded pieces
Rollup data is erasure-coded: split and expanded with redundancy, so the whole can be rebuilt from only a fraction of the pieces.
Spread across operators
A disperser sends each operator only its share, so each node stores a small slice instead of every byte, which lets throughput grow.
Signed receipts on Ethereum
Operators sign that they hold their pieces; the combined signature is checked on Ethereum, backed by restaked ETH that can be slashed.

About Eigen Labs
Eigen Labs
EigenLayer restaking, EigenDA, EigenCloud
Seattle company behind EigenLayer, which lets Ethereum stakers 'restake' their ETH to secure other services, such as oracles, bridges and data layers. They earn extra rewards but risk losing stake. It also runs EigenDA, a data service for rollups.
- Penalties (slashing) went live in April 2025, so misbehaving operators can now actually lose restaked funds.
- EigenDA splits data into coded pieces spread over many operators, to handle more rollup traffic.
- Rebranded its developer platform as EigenCloud in 2025, with $70M from a16z.
