Current obstacles
- Relying on rivalsCursor depends on models from labs selling rival coding tools, squeezing margins and control.
Physics limits
- Speed and smarts pull against each otherSmall models answer in milliseconds for inline edits but reason less; large models reason better but take seconds to minutes, because each token re-reads more weights.
- Large codebases overflow the contextBig repositories hold tens of millions of tokens, far beyond a 1M-token window, so the agent must search and summarise and can miss distant dependencies.
- Errors compound over long tasksIf each step succeeds 99% of the time, a 100-step task succeeds only about 37% of the time (0.99^100). Agents need near-perfect per-step reliability to work for hours.
How it works

A fork of VS Code
Cursor is a modified VS Code, so extensions and shortcuts carry over while AI is wired into editing, search and the terminal.
Predicting your next edit
A fast in-house model suggests the next change, often several lines or a jump elsewhere in the file, in the time it takes to type.
Searching by meaning
The repo is split into chunks turned into embeddings (numeric fingerprints of meaning), so the agent can pull up relevant code fast.
Its own agent model
Composer, trained with reinforcement learning inside real codebases, runs agent tasks quickly; Cursor 2.0 runs several agents in parallel.

About Anysphere (Cursor)
Anysphere (Cursor)
Cursor code editor, Composer model
Anysphere makes Cursor, an AI code editor built on VS Code, founded in 2022 by four MIT students. Cursor mixes other labs' models with its own and became one of the fastest-growing software companies.
- SpaceX bought Anysphere for about $60B in stock; the deal closed on 14 August 2026.
- Cursor 2.0 (October 2025) added Composer, Anysphere's own fast coding model.
- Relies on Anthropic and OpenAI models while competing with their coding agents.
