Current obstacles
- Testing ideas in real labsIdeas are cheap. Testing them needs physical experiments, which are still slow and costly to automate.
Physics limits
- Experiments run at biology's paceHypotheses must be tested in cells or animals. Human cells divide about once a day and mouse studies take months, so lab time, not reasoning speed, limits discovery.
- The literature itself is unreliableReplication efforts find many biology results don't hold up; in a large cancer-biology project, repeated effects were about 85% smaller, so reading more also means more noise.
- Trained for likely text, not true textThe model learns to produce plausible words. Facts seen only once or twice in training can't be recalled reliably, so some rate of confident errors is built into the method.
How it works

Specialists for each step
Crow searches the literature, Falcon writes deep reviews, Owl checks whether something has been done before, and Phoenix plans chemistry.
Answers from full papers
The agents read full-text papers, not just abstracts, and cite the passages they rely on, which cuts invented references.
From hypothesis to lab test
Robin chains literature agents with a data-analysis agent; human scientists run the lab tests it proposes and feed results back.
Long autonomous runs
Kosmos works for up to 12 hours per run, reading about 1,500 papers and writing about 42,000 lines of analysis code.

About FutureHouse
FutureHouse
AI scientist agents, Robin, Kosmos
FutureHouse is a San Francisco nonprofit founded in 2023 to automate scientific research with AI, starting with biology. In 2025 it spun out Edison Scientific to sell its AI scientist, Kosmos.
- Backed by Eric Schmidt at launch in 2023.
- Its Robin agents suggested ripasudil as a possible treatment for dry macular degeneration, an eye disease (May 2025).
- Spun out Edison Scientific to sell the Kosmos AI scientist (November 2025).
