Current obstacles

  • Unit economicsProfit per car depends on more hardware cost cuts and busy cars, against low Chinese ride-hail fares.

Physics limits

  • People are not fully predictableA car must guess what pedestrians, cyclists and drivers will do next. That future is uncertain, so planners must keep safety margins that cost speed in dense traffic.
  • Proving safety takes vast mileageUS drivers average about one fatal crash per 100 million miles. Showing a robot driver is safer with statistical confidence takes hundreds of millions of driverless miles (RAND estimated ~275M).
  • Rain, fog and snow blind sensorsWater droplets scatter the infrared light lidar uses and blur cameras, so sensing range shrinks exactly when stopping distances grow. Radar sees through but only in coarse detail.

Sensors

Cheaper automotive-grade kit

Gen-7 uses automotive-grade lidars, cameras and radars; Pony says the self-driving kit costs about 70% less than Gen-6.

Vehicles

Built with carmakers

The system goes into Toyota, BAIC and GAC electric models built together with those carmakers.

Remote

One monitor, many cars

Remote staff each oversee many cars at once (up to about a dozen, Reuters reported in 2025), stepping in only when a car asks.
