Current obstacles
- Customer-dependent go decisionIntel says it may not build 14A at scale unless it wins a major outside customer.
Physics limits
- High-NA prints half a field per shotHigh-NA optics expose only 26 × 16.5 mm per shot, half the usual area. Large chips must be stitched from two exposures or designed smaller, and every stitch costs area and yield.
- Randomness sets a floor on uniformityAt this scale features are a few dozen atoms wide. Random variation in photon counts, resist molecules and atom positions means no two transistors are quite alike, whatever the tool.
- Contacts dominate resistanceAs contacts and vias shrink toward 10 nm, their resistance climbs steeply. More of the energy is lost pushing current through wiring than switching the transistors themselves.
How it works

First node with High-NA EUV
14A is planned to print its finest layers with High-NA EUV, making lines about 1.7 times smaller in one pass instead of several.
PowerDirect
It extends 18A's backside power with contacts that run straight from the back to each transistor, cutting resistance in the power path.
Refined RibbonFET
The stacked-ribbon transistors from 18A are improved; Intel targets 15–20% better performance per watt than 18A.

About Intel
Intel
PC and server CPUs, Intel Foundry, 18A, 14A
Intel, founded in 1968, invented the commercial microprocessor. After falling behind TSMC in chipmaking, it is trying to catch up with its 18A node and win outside customers for its factories. In 2025 the US government took about a 10% stake.
- Panther Lake, the first 18A chip, launched in January 2026 from Fab 52 in Arizona.
- US government took about 9.9% in Aug 2025. NVIDIA ($5B) and SoftBank ($2B) also invested.
- Lip-Bu Tan became CEO in March 2025 and cut costs and jobs sharply.
