Current obstacles

  • More tractors, more supervisorsRemote staff must grow with the fleet unless machines need help far less often.

Physics limits

  • Stereo cameras judge far distances poorlyDepth from two cameras gets worse with the square of distance. A heavy machine needs to see obstacles far enough ahead to stop, but that is exactly where depth estimates get fuzzy, especially in dust or low light.
  • Remote drivers are always a little lateA video link adds tens to hundreds of milliseconds, and a person needs about a second to react. The tractor must stop itself for sudden hazards; remote help only works for slow problems.

How it works

Kit

Add-on sensors and computer

Cameras, a computer and control hardware are fitted to an existing tractor so it can steer, drive and run its implement on its own.

Plan

Follows a planned job

The tractor follows a set path across the field and watches for obstacles, stopping itself if something is in the way.

Supervise

People watch remotely in real time

Carbon staff watch live video over a satellite or cellular link and can take over or send commands when the tractor gets stuck.

About Carbon Robotics

The team behind Carbon ATK

Carbon Robotics

LaserWeeder, Carbon ATK tractor autonomy

Seattle company whose LaserWeeder, pulled behind a tractor, uses cameras and AI to find weeds and kill them with lasers, so vegetable farms need no herbicide or hand weeding. It also sells Carbon ATK, a kit that makes existing tractors self-driving.

  • LaserWeeders work on vegetable and specialty-crop farms in the US and abroad, replacing hand crews and herbicide.
  • LaserWeeder G2 (Feb 2025) is modular, lighter and faster than the first version.
  • Carbon ATK (formerly AutoTractor), launched 2025, makes tractors self-driving, with remote operators on standby.
