Current obstacles

  • Dust and variable lightingHarvest dust and shady canopies make it harder for cameras to see.

Physics limits

  • Tree canopies block satellite signalsLeaves and branches absorb and scatter GPS signals, so centimetre-accurate positioning drops out in orchards. Vision must fill the gap, but it only knows position relative to what it can see.
  • Vision position errors add up over distanceEstimating motion from images makes small errors each frame, and they accumulate. Without fixed reference points, a machine slowly drifts off its true position and must re-anchor to recognised landmarks.

How it works

Cameras instead of GPS

Cameras on the machine watch the tree rows and ground; software works out where it is from what it sees, not from satellites.

Steer

Driving between the rows

The software steers harvesters, sweepers and small robots down rows and around obstacles, even under thick tree canopy.

Fleet

One system, many machines

The same autonomy software runs on different makes of machine, so a grower can automate a mixed fleet.

Camera-based orchard autonomy, farm-ng Amiga

San Jose company making camera-based self-driving kits for orchard and specialty-crop machines, built to work under thick tree cover where GPS fails. In 2025 it bought farm-ng, maker of the small modular Amiga robot.

  • Camera-first autonomy for orchards such as almonds, where tree canopy blocks GPS signals.
  • Bought farm-ng in July 2025 to cover both tree crops and small bedded crops.
  • Raised a $15M Series A from agtech investors including Acre Venture Partners.
