Stage: Deploy (4 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-07-30, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Make battery-electric trucks practical for Europe's long-haul freight. With fast megawatt charging during the driver's legally required break, a truck can cover over 1,000 km a day, like a diesel.
Status: Series production with 750 kW megawatt charging began July 2026; delivered in nine European countries.
Next milestone: Updated eTGX/eTGS with ~570 km range, target 2026

## Upcoming events

- **2026**: Updated eTGX/eTGS with ~570 km range

## Most important updates

- **30 Jul 2026**: MAN starts series production of eTGX and eTGS trucks with megawatt charging. MAN began regular production of eTGX and eTGS trucks with the Megawatt Charging System at its Munich plant, which it says makes it the first European maker to do so. - **10 Jul 2026**: MAN's battery-electric sales rise 37% in H1 2026 to about 1,100 vehicles. MAN Truck & Bus sold about 51,000 vehicles in the first half of 2026, up 8%, including roughly 600 electric trucks and 500 electric buses. - **30 Jan 2025**: DB Schenker takes delivery of the first ten MAN eTGX electric tractors. MAN handed DB Schenker its first ten eTGX battery-electric tractor units at the Munich plant, part of a 2023 letter of intent for 100 heavy electric trucks by 2026. ## Current obstacles

- **Few megawatt chargers yet**: MCS is only now entering the market; MAN calls the charging ecosystem at an important stage of introduction, so routes are limited.
- **Diesel still dominates sales**: About 600 electric trucks in H1 2026 against 32,000 trucks overall; diesel remains the vast majority of deliveries.

## Physics limits

- **Batteries are heavy per unit of energy**: Batteries store far less energy per kilogram than diesel, so long range takes several tonnes of packs, trading payload for distance.
- **Megawatt charging needs big grid connections**: Charging several trucks at 750 kW each needs grid connections the size of a small factory's, which take years to plan and build.

## How it works

### Battery: Modular packs on the frame

Four to seven packs (up to 623 kWh) sit along the chassis; operators trade range against payload, since every pack adds weight.

### Charging: Megawatt Charging System

An MCS socket takes up to 750 kW (1,000 A at 750 V), double the 375 kW of car-style CCS, so six packs charge 20-80% in under 30 minutes.

### Operations: Charge in the driver's break

EU drivers must stop for 45 minutes after 4.5 hours; MAN says MCS refills enough in that time for more than 1,000 km a day.
