Stage: Pilot (3 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-08-05, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Make lidar cheap and tough enough to fit as standard on cars, robotaxis and trucks, giving them a direct 3D distance sensor that works in darkness and glare, where cameras struggle.
Status: Shipping for VW ID. Buzz and Daimler truck fleets; ID. Buzz series start due late 2026.
Next milestone: VW ID. Buzz (Mobileye Drive) start of series production, target 2026

## Current obstacles

- **Thin cash buffer**: Liquidity was about $48.5M at end-June 2026 against an $18.5M quarterly net loss, topped up by a ~$30M share sale in July.
- **Revenue waits on customer launches**: Growth hinges on VW, Mobileye and Daimler reaching production on time; Level 3 car programs only ramp in 2027-2028.

## Physics limits

- **Eye safety and sunlight at 905 nm**: 905 nm light must stay at low power to be safe for eyes, and sunlight adds noise at that wavelength, so range on dark objects falls in bright sun.
- **Fog and spray scatter the beam**: Water droplets scatter laser light and return false echoes; filtering helps, but no lidar keeps full range in dense fog.

## How it works

### Laser: 905 nm pulses, silicon detectors

Fires near-infrared laser pulses and times the echoes; 905 nm light can be read by low-cost silicon detectors, which keeps the sensor cheap.

### Scanner: No spinning head

A compact solid-state scanner sweeps the beam over 8,000+ lines a second, so the unit can sit behind a grille or windscreen.

### Software: Perception on the sensor

InnovizAPP software classifies cars, pedestrians and motorcycles and estimates their shape, speed and acceleration from the point cloud.
