Frontier: [Vehicles](https://technooptimist.io/vehicles.md) · Field: Range-extended EVs · Company: [Ford Motor Company](https://technooptimist.io/companies/ford.md)
Stage: Proto (2 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2025-12-17, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Keep America's best-selling pickup electric-driven while removing the range and towing worries that held back the battery-only Lightning. A generator on board lets owners tow long distances without stopping to charge.
Status: Announced December 2025 for the 2027 model year; Ford has not given battery size, specs or a launch date.
Next milestone: Market launch as a 2027 model, target 2027

## Milestones

| Status | Milestone | Date | Slip |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Done | Battery-only F-150 Lightning production ends | Dec 2025 | |
| Done | Lightning EREV announced, to be built at Rouge EV Center | 15 Dec 2025 | |
| Planned | Market launch as a 2027 model | 2027 | |

## Upcoming events

- **2027**: Market launch as a 2027 model

## Most important updates

- **17 Dec 2025**: Ford's EV reset carries a $19.5 billion write-down; Lightning EREV expected in 2027. WardsAuto reported that Ford declared a $19.5 billion write-down tied to its EV investments, mostly in the fourth quarter of 2025, as it ended the all-electric F-150 Lightning less than four years after launch. - **15 Dec 2025**: Ford ends the battery-only F-150 Lightning and announces a range-extended successor with 700+ miles. Ford said the next-generation F-150 Lightning will be an extended-range electric vehicle: electric motors drive the wheels and a high-power generator supplies extra range, for an estimated 700+ miles. ([our story](https://technooptimist.io/stories/ford-ends-the-battery-only-f-150-lightning-and-announces-a-range-1e15f1cb.md) · [original source](https://www.fromtheroad.ford.com/us/en/articles/2025/next-gen-f-150-lightning-extended-range-electric-vehicle))

## Current obstacles

- **Proving the range claim**: The 700-mile figure is a Ford estimate; battery size, tank size and towing figures are unpublished, so real-world range is unknown.
- **Cost of two powertrains**: It must carry a battery, motors, an engine and a generator yet compete on price with Ford's own petrol and hybrid F-150s.

## Physics limits

- **Towing drains batteries fast**: A trailer's drag and weight raise energy use per mile sharply, so a pure battery truck big enough for long tows becomes very heavy and costly; a small generator is the cheaper fix.
- **Generator mode is not EV-efficient**: Turning fuel into electricity and then into motion loses energy at each step, so on long generator-powered trips efficiency is near that of a conventional engine.

## How it works

### Drive: Electric motors only

The wheels are turned 100% by electric motors; the petrol engine has no mechanical link to them.

### Generator: Onboard power station

A petrol engine drives a high-power generator that refills the battery on long trips or when towing. Ford has not said which engine it uses.

### Power out: Exportable electricity

Like the battery-only Lightning, it can power job sites, campsites or a home during an outage.

## Spec sheet

| Spec | F-150 Lightning EREV | F-150 Lightning (battery-electric, 2022-2025) | Provenance |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Range with generator (Ford estimate) | 700+ miles | 320 mi (battery-only, largest pack) | reported |
| Acceleration (Ford claim) | under 5 s | | reported |

Provenance: reported = stated by the company; estimated = our estimate; sample = a sample figure.
