Science Corporation says its first patient with Stargardt disease received the PRIMA implant in May, in its PRIMAlia trial at Sydney Eye Hospital in Australia. At the first rehabilitation session the patient saw a letter; at the second he read a word. The company reports this from one patient in early sessions, so it is not evidence of broader results.

## Key facts

- Stargardt disease is an inherited condition that damages central vision; the company cites about 150,000 people worldwide who have lost vision to it.
- In the NEJM geographic atrophy study of PRIMA, 84% of the 32 patients assessed at 12 months could read letters, numbers and words.
- PRIMA is CE marked in the EU and registered for supply in the UK. In the US, the FDA granted Humanitarian Use Device designations for advanced geographic atrophy and Stargardt disease.
- A Humanitarian Device Exemption would still be needed before treating patients in the US outside a clinical trial.
- In Australia PRIMA is an investigational device: not on the national register and not commercially available.
