OpenAI said it reached the September 2026 goal Sam Altman set a year earlier: a system that carries out well-defined research tasks under human direction, including tasks that would take a skilled researcher a few days. The judgement is OpenAI's own. Its next stated target is a fully automated AI researcher by March 2028.
