At the parade for the People's Republic's 70th anniversary in Beijing, China displayed the vehicle-mounted DF-17 alongside the DF-41 intercontinental missile. Its glide vehicle flies lower before delivering its warhead, which makes detection and interception harder; the parade organiser said the weapons shown were in active service.

## Key facts

- First public display of a hypersonic glide missile by any major military.
- Analysts warned its speed shortens decision time in a crisis.
