Stage: Deploy (4 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-08-05, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Let people paralysed from the waist down walk in daily life, not just in therapy. Standing and walking with a device at home is meant to restore independence, eye-level contact and exercise a wheelchair cannot give.
Status: On sale in the US since April 2025; Medicare pays for it; widening access via an Ottobock Care pilot.
Next milestone: Ottobock Care distribution pilot (six months), target Aug 2026

- **Feb 2027**: Ottobock Care pilot ends (six months from August 2026)

## Most important updates

- **5 Aug 2026**: Lifeward starts a six-month pilot with Ottobock Care to widen US access to ReWalk 7. Lifeward and Ottobock Care, a US orthotics and prosthetics patient-care organisation, launched a six-month pilot to bring ReWalk 7 to more patients. - **15 Apr 2025**: Lifeward launches ReWalk 7 in the US with crutch controls, two speeds and cloud connectivity. Lifeward began US sales of ReWalk 7 for personal and clinical use. - **13 Mar 2025**: FDA clears ReWalk 7, the seventh-generation ReWalk personal exoskeleton. Lifeward received FDA 510(k) clearance for ReWalk 7, the seventh generation of its personal exoskeleton for people with spinal cord injury. - **12 Apr 2024**: Medicare sets a $91,032 payment for personal exoskeletons such as the ReWalk. The US Medicare agency revised its April 2024 fee schedule to include a lump-sum payment for personal exoskeletons, including the ReWalk. ## Current obstacles

- **Reimbursement one claim at a time**: Medicare has a payment rate, but each patient still needs a prescription, training and an insurer approval before a device ships.
- **Reaching patients**: Few clinics can evaluate and train users, so Lifeward is testing distribution through Ottobock Care's US clinics.

## Physics limits

- **No self-balancing**: Keeping a person upright without crutches needs fast, powerful ankle and hip control and more battery; that adds weight and cost, so crutch-balanced designs stay lighter but tie up both hands.
- **Speed and energy**: Powered exoskeletons walk far slower than able-bodied people and run on batteries the user must carry; every extra motor or hour of runtime adds kilograms to strap onto the body.

## How it works

### Frame: A brace with motors at hips and knees

A rigid frame straps to the legs and torso; gears and motors at each hip and knee swing the legs through a step, carrying the device's own weight.

### Intent: Leaning forward starts a step

A tilt sensor reads the user's forward lean and weight shift and triggers the next step, so walking follows the body rather than a joystick.

### Controls: Buttons on the crutch and a smartwatch

New in ReWalk 7: a crutch button to stand, walk, change speed and stop, plus a watch and app to pick modes and track use.

### Balance: Crutches do the balancing

The machine moves the legs but does not balance itself; the user steadies with forearm crutches, which is why upper-body strength is required.
