Frontier: [Robotics](https://technooptimist.io/robotics.md) · Field: Exoskeletons · Company: [Wandercraft](https://technooptimist.io/companies/wandercraft.md)
Stage: Deploy (4 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2025-12-29, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Let patients relearn walking sooner and with far more repetitions. Practising thousands of correct steps early after stroke or injury helps the brain and spinal cord rewire; the exoskeleton supplies the support therapists cannot.
Status: In US and European rehab clinics; now owned by Wandercraft after its Oct 2026 purchase of Ekso Bionics.
Next milestone: Integration with Atalante X support across 700+ centres, target 2026

## Milestones

| Done | Wandercraft acquires Ekso Bionics | 1 Oct 2026 | |
| Current | Integration with Atalante X support across 700+ centres | 2026 | |

## Upcoming events

- **2026**: Integration with Atalante X support across 700+ centres

## Most important updates

- **29 Dec 2025**: Ekso Bionics agrees to merge with Applied Digital's cloud unit and explore selling its exoskeleton business. Ekso Bionics signed a non-binding term sheet to combine with Applied Digital Cloud into ChronoScale, an AI-compute company in which Applied Digital would own about 97%. - **13 Jun 2022**: Ekso's EksoNR becomes the first exoskeleton FDA-cleared for multiple sclerosis rehab. The FDA cleared EksoNR for rehabilitation of patients with multiple sclerosis, which Ekso Bionics said made it the first exoskeleton cleared for that use. ## Current obstacles

- **Ownership upheaval**: Ekso spent 2025-26 being folded into an AI-compute company and sold; Wandercraft must now keep clinics supported through the transition.
- **Clinic budgets**: Rehab centres must fund the device and train therapists; sales had been falling before the sale (Q2 2025 revenue $2.1M vs $5M a year earlier).

## Physics limits

- **Short battery life**: Driving hip and knee motors with a person's weight drains batteries fast, about an hour per charge, so clinics swap batteries; bigger packs add weight to a 25 kg frame.
- **Not self-balancing**: The frame moves the legs but the patient balances with aids, which excludes people without enough arm strength; self-balancing designs need far more power and mass.

## How it works

### Frame: Motors at hips and knees

A metal brace straps to legs, feet and torso; battery-powered motors drive the hips and knees, while the ankles move passively.

### Stepping: Weight shift or therapist starts a step

Each step starts when the patient shifts weight or the therapist triggers it from a handheld controller; patients use a cane, crutches or walker.

### Adaptive help: Assistance tuned per leg

Therapists set how much the motors help each leg, or let it adapt to the patient's effort; GaitCoach software flags what to correct.

### Failsafe: Knees lock on power loss

If power fails the knees lock and the hips go free, like a passive leg brace, so the patient is not dropped.
