Stage: Deploy (4 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-03-17, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Move factory cobots from hand-programmed motions to AI that sees parts, plans its own paths and learns tasks from demonstrations, on the arm already installed in 100,000+ cells, so partners can ship AI applications fast.
Status: Sold since late 2024; AI Trainer for recording robot training data added March 2026.
Next milestone: Industrial training dataset released with Scale AI, target 2026

## Current obstacles

- **Built for developers, not factory staff**: The kit targets integrators and AI firms that write applications on it; a plant still needs one of those partners to turn it into a working cell.
- **Industrial training data still scarce**: The large dataset promised with Scale AI for 2026 is what learned models need; until such data exists, most cells still run hand-programmed motions.

## Physics limits

- **Demonstrations are slow to collect**: Imitation learning needs many recorded examples of each task, and each one takes a person real time at a real robot. Data grows with human hours, not with compute.
- **Simulation misses real contact**: Friction, part tolerances and cable stiffness are hard to model exactly, so skills trained in simulation can fail when parts touch, which is most of assembly.
- **Edge compute caps model size**: Models must run beside the robot within a few tens of watts and react within milliseconds, which limits how large the AI on the arm can be.

## How it works

### Edge AI box: A GPU computer beside the arm

A Jetson AGX Orin runs vision and planning models on site, with no cloud link, and talks to the arm through UR's PolyScope X software and ROS 2.

### Perception: Finding the part in 3D

A 3D camera feeds NVIDIA models that estimate a part's exact position and orientation, so the robot can pick it without fixtures or a taught spot.

### Planning: The robot plans its own path

GPU motion planning (NVIDIA cuMotion) computes collision-free paths in moments, replacing waypoints an engineer would hand-teach.

### AI Trainer: Learning by imitation

A person guides a leader arm; a follower arm copies it while motion, force and four camera views are recorded as data to train vision-language-action models.
