Stage: Scaling (5 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-07-29, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Build Patriot interceptors faster than wars use them up. Ukraine and the Middle East burn through them quickly, and stocks are thin, so output must rise from about 600 to 2,000 a year.
Status: Seven-year deal worth up to $58.6B signed July 2026; aim is about 2,000 interceptors a year by end-2030.
Next milestone: Capacity tripled (about 2,000 a year), target Dec 2030

## Milestones

| Status | Milestone | Date | Slip |

| Current | Capacity tripled (about 2,000 a year) | Dec 2030 | |

## Upcoming events

- **Dec 2030**: Capacity tripled (about 2,000 a year)

## Most important updates

- **29 Jul 2026**: Pentagon awards Lockheed Martin up to $58.62B for seven years of PAC-3 MSE production. The US government added a seven-year contract modification worth up to $53.86 billion to April's $4.7 billion action, for a multiyear PAC-3 MSE total of $58.62 billion. - **10 Apr 2026**: Army awards Lockheed Martin $4.7B to accelerate PAC-3 MSE production. The Army awarded Lockheed Martin a $4.7 billion undefinitized contract action for accelerated PAC-3 MSE production, the first contract under the January framework. - **6 Jan 2026**: Lockheed Martin and the Pentagon agree a framework to raise PAC-3 MSE output from 600 to 2,000 a year. Lockheed Martin signed a seven-year framework with the Department of War to more than triple capacity for PAC-3 MSE, the Patriot system's hit-to-kill interceptor. ## Current obstacles

- **Supplier ramp**: Tripling output needs every supplier, from seekers to rocket motors, to triple too. Motor makers have been the tightest bottleneck in US missile production.
- **Contract still being finalised**: Both 2026 awards are undefinitized: price and terms are still being negotiated, and later years depend on Congress appropriating the money.

## Physics limits

- **Range is set by the rocket**: A hit-to-kill interceptor must reach the target with energy to spare for the final turns. A bigger motor buys range but also size, so fewer fit on each launcher.

## How it works

### Hit-to-kill: Destroying a missile by collision

No large blast warhead: it steers into the incoming missile and destroys it by the force of impact, so it must hit the target body directly.

### Homing: Its own radar for the last seconds

Ground radar guides it most of the way. At the end a Ka-band radar seeker finds the target, and about 180 tiny forebody motors nudge it into collision.

### MSE upgrade: A bigger two-pulse motor

The MSE adds a larger solid motor that fires in two pulses, keeping energy for later in flight, plus bigger fins: up to about 50% more reach than PAC-3.

### Factory: Final assembly in Camden

Parts from many suppliers meet in Camden, Arkansas. Lockheed broke ground on a Munitions Acceleration Center there in 2026 and plans 50% more staff.
