- **20 Feb 2025**: L3Harris breaks ground on four new solid rocket motor buildings in Camden, Arkansas. Construction began on four solid rocket motor production buildings at the Aerojet Rocketdyne campus in Camden, funded under a $215.6M Defense Production Act agreement. ## Current obstacles

- **IPO delay**: The Missile Solutions IPO moved from late 2026 to mid-2027 after investors undervalued the business, L3Harris says.
- **Plants sized ahead of contracts**: L3Harris is negotiating about $20B in new contracts that would triple the backlog.

## Physics limits

- **Propellant is fuel and oxidiser in one solid**: Solid propellant can ignite while it is mixed and cast, so plants need remote operation, spread-out buildings and slow safety steps; capacity grows with buildings and land, not just faster machines.
- **Propellant takes days to cure**: Cast propellant must cure as its rubbery binder sets, and large motors tie up a casting pit and a building for that time, so big-motor output scales with floor space more than with speed.

## How it works

### Mix, grind, cast: The motor production chain

Ingredients are mixed and ground into propellant, cast into motor cases, then motors go to final assembly; Virginia adds buildings for each step.

### Consolidation: Fewer moves between buildings

Key steps in Camden move under one 60,000 sq ft roof with its own mixer building, cutting in-plant travel 80%.

### Large motors: Boosters for interceptors

A new 110-acre Camden campus targets big motors for interceptors, hypersonic vehicles and missile-defence targets.

## About L3Harris Technologies

US defence contractor that bought Aerojet Rocketdyne in 2023, a long-time maker of solid rocket motors for Javelin, Stinger, Patriot and every US Air Force ICBM. In 2026 it put its missile work into a Missile Solutions business backed by a $1B Pentagon investment.

- Camden, Arkansas builds over 75,000 solid rocket motors a year for Javelin, Stinger and Patriot.
- Pentagon's $1B investment in Missile Solutions closed April 2026; the IPO slipped to mid-2027.
