Frontier: [Longevity](https://technooptimist.io/longevity.md) · Field: Preventive health scans · Company: [Function Health](https://technooptimist.io/companies/function-health.md)
Stage: Deploy (4 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-01-05, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Make a yearly whole-body MRI cheap and quick enough to be routine, so cancers and other silent disease are found early. The lever is AI that lets a short, noisy scan read like a long one.
Status: Sold as Function's Annual MRI: about 22 minutes, head to pelvis, at 200+ US imaging sites.
Next milestone: Offered at 200+ US imaging locations, target 2026

## Milestones

| Status | Milestone | Date | Slip |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Done | First FDA 510(k) clearance for Ezra Flash AI (brain MRI) | Jun 2023 | |
| Done | Ezra Flash clearance extended to abdomen and pelvis | Feb 2025 | |
| Done | Acquired by Function Health; scan cut to 22 min, $499 | May 2025 | |
| Current | Offered at 200+ US imaging locations | 2026 | |
| Planned | 15-minute, $500 full-body scan (Ezra's stated goal) | 2026 | |

## Upcoming events

- **2026**: Offered at 200+ US imaging locations
- **2026**: 15-minute, $500 full-body scan (Ezra's stated goal)

## Most important updates

- **5 Jan 2026**: TIME profiles Ezra's full-body MRI: nearly 5% of clients flagged for highly suspicious cancer, while doctors warn of false alarms. A TIME profile of Ezra founder Emi Gal describes the post-acquisition scan: under 30 minutes, head to pelvis, about $500, focused on cancer in 13 organs. - **May 2025**: Function Health acquires Ezra and launches a 22-minute, $499 AI-assisted full-body MRI for its members. Function Health, the blood-testing membership, bought full-body MRI startup Ezra for undisclosed terms. ([our story](https://technooptimist.io/stories/function-health-acquires-ezra-and-launches-a-22-minute-499-ai-assisted-ea6fdeb5.md) · [original source](https://longevity.technology/news/function-health-acquires-full-body-scanning-firm-ezra/))
- **Feb 2025**: Ezra wins expanded FDA 510(k) clearance for its Ezra Flash AI, now covering abdomen and pelvis MRI as well as the brain. Ezra received a new FDA 510(k) clearance for Ezra Flash, its AI model that reduces noise in MRI images while keeping diagnostic detail. ## Current obstacles

- **Incidental findings**: Most people have something harmless on a scan. Each flagged spot can mean more tests, cost and worry, and no major medical body yet recommends screening MRI.
- **Proving it saves lives**: No large trial yet shows that screening healthy people with whole-body MRI lowers deaths; the evidence is company-reported detection rates.

## Physics limits

- **Signal versus time**: MRI signal grows with scan time; halving the time cuts signal, so image quality on a short scan depends on how much an AI can safely infer rather than measure.
- **Air gives MRI little to see**: MRI reads signals from hydrogen in water and fat, so air-filled lungs show poorly; Function sells a separate low-dose lung CT to screen for lung cancer and nodules.

## How it works

### Magnet, no X-rays: MRI images soft tissue without radiation

A strong magnet and radio pulses make hydrogen in tissue give off signals that build 3D images of organs, so a yearly scan adds no radiation dose.

### Short scan, AI cleanup: Trading scan time for noise, then removing it

A faster scan collects less signal and looks grainy. Ezra Flash, an FDA-cleared AI model, removes that noise while keeping detail radiologists need.

### Radiologist read: A doctor reviews every scan

A board-certified radiologist reads each MRI with AI support and ranks findings by severity; urgent ones go to a clinician who contacts the member.

### Yearly baseline: Change over time is the signal

Repeating the scan each year lets readers compare against the person's own baseline, so a growing spot stands out from one that has always been there.
