Frontier: [Energy](https://technooptimist.io/energy.md) · Field: Microreactors · Company: [BWX Technologies](https://technooptimist.io/companies/bwx-technologies.md)
Stage: Proto (2 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: facts checked 2026-10-14
Goal: Power mission-essential work on an Army base with its own reactor, behind the meter, instead of relying only on the grid.
Status: Picked 26 Aug 2026 as the Army's first BANR site; phase 1 covers siting, licensing and fuel.
Next milestone: Phase 1: site, licensing start and TRISO fuel work

## Milestones

| Status | Milestone | Date | Slip |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Done | Army launches the Janus microreactor program | Oct 2025 | |
| Done | BWXT selected to deploy BANR at Fort Campbell | 26 Aug 2026 | |
| Current | Phase 1: site, licensing start and TRISO fuel work | | |
| Planned | Groundbreaking for site construction | 2028 | |

## Upcoming events

- **2028**: Groundbreaking for site construction

## Current obstacles

- **No licence yet**: Nuclear regulatory processes for a new design on a military base are only starting; no licensing milestone has been reached.
- **Site not final**: Final site selection within Fort Campbell is part of the first contract phase, so siting is still open.

## How it works

### Fuel: Coated fuel particles

Uranium kernels wrapped in ceramic and carbon layers (TRISO) hold in fission products even at high temperature.

### Cooling: Heat leaves without pumps

Natural convection and radiation carry decay heat away after shutdown, so the reactor does not need active cooling to stay safe.

## Spec sheet
