Stage: Pilot (3 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-07-16, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Make enough TRISO fuel for the first wave of US microreactors and small reactors. Fuel, not reactor design, is a main bottleneck for these reactors, and few US lines can make TRISO.
Status: Making HALEU TRISO fuel at Oak Ridge (~500 kg/yr); expanding past 2 t/yr; Idaho site built.
Next milestone: Oak Ridge capacity above 2 tonnes a year

## Most important updates

- **16 Jul 2026**: Standard Nuclear lists on the NYSE as STDN after a downsized $150 million IPO. Standard Nuclear sold 10 million shares at $15, raising $150 million, and began trading on the NYSE under STDN on 16 July 2026. - **16 Jun 2026**: Oklo and Standard Nuclear sign an MOU to turn recycled reactor material into TRISO fuel. Oklo and Standard Nuclear signed a non-binding memorandum to explore feeding uranium and transuranic material recovered at Oklo's planned recycling plant in Oak Ridge into Standard Nuclear's TRISO production. - **26 Jan 2026**: Standard Nuclear starts producing HALEU TRISO fuel and raises a $140 million Series A. Standard Nuclear began making HALEU TRISO fuel at its Oak Ridge plant after receiving its first HALEU from DOE's Savannah River Site, for Radiant's Kaleidos microreactor under DOE's Reactor Pilot Program. ## Current obstacles

- **Scaling from kilograms to tonnes**: Going from ~500 kg to over 2 t a year means more coaters, more HALEU and stricter security for richer uranium.
- **HALEU feedstock**: Production depends on scarce HALEU, so far from DOE's Savannah River Site; commercial US HALEU enrichment is years away.

## Physics limits

- **Slow, careful manufacturing**: Each particle needs several coatings deposited in sequence and checked for defects; a few failed coatings let fission products escape, so quality control sets the pace.
- **Less uranium per litre**: Most of a TRISO fuel element is coating and graphite, so cores need richer HALEU to pack enough fissile material into a small reactor.

## How it works

### Kernel: A grain of uranium

Each particle starts as a uranium kernel smaller than a poppy seed, here made with HALEU so small cores can run for years.

### Coatings: Ceramic shells around each grain

Layers of porous carbon, dense carbon and silicon carbide wrap the kernel; each layer works as a tiny containment vessel.

### Forms: Compacts and pebbles

Thousands of coated particles are pressed into graphite pellets or balls, the form a given reactor design loads.

### Oversight: DOE, not NRC, for now

The Oak Ridge line runs under DOE safety authority via a December 2025 agreement, serving DOE's reactor pilot projects.
