Frontier: [Energy](https://technooptimist.io/energy.md) · Field: Grid batteries · Company: [BYD](https://technooptimist.io/companies/byd.md)
Stage: Deploy (4 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-07-09, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Store solar and wind power in ever bigger, cheaper battery blocks so grids can run on renewables around the clock. Bigger cells and units mean fewer parts, less land and lower cost per kilowatt-hour stored.
Status: Haohan won 13.7 GWh of orders in Abu Dhabi and Poland in 2026; BYD storage is in 110+ countries.
Next milestone: Siedlce (Poland) construction starts, target Q3 2026

## Current obstacles

- **Claims not yet proven at scale**: Failure-rate, cost and 10,000-cycle figures are BYD's own; the first GWh-scale Haohan sites are only now being built.
- **Bigger cells, bigger failures**: One 2,710 Ah cell stores far more energy than a standard cell, so if it overheats more heat is released and containment must scale with it.

## Physics limits

- **LFP trades density for safety and life**: Lithium iron phosphate is cheap, long-lived and hard to ignite, but stores less energy per kilogram than nickel chemistries; sites need more cells and land per MWh.
- **Batteries cover hours, not seasons**: Lithium storage pays off when it cycles daily over a few hours; holding energy for weeks would need far more cells per watt delivered, which is too costly.

## How it works

### Cell: One huge Blade cell

A long, flat 2,710 Ah lithium iron phosphate cell, about three times a normal storage cell, so a site needs far fewer cells, joints and sensors.

### Packing: Cells straight into the box

Cells go into the enclosure without separate modules: 52% of Haohan's volume is cells, against about a third in the older MC Cube-T.

### Grid-forming: Inverter that steadies the grid

The GC Flux inverter (2.5–10 MW) can set voltage and frequency itself, reacting in under 100 ms and giving inertia like a spinning generator.

### Control: One brain for a whole site

BYD's GC Master energy management software tracks tens of millions of data points and can run a single site of more than 15 GWh.
