## Current obstacles

- **Network effects come slowly**: Each new currency needs a settlement bank and enough counterparties; years after launch only three currencies are live.
- **Thin revenue**: Revenue was $285,000 in 2023 while losses grew 75%; staff were cut from over 130 to about 90 in July 2024.
- **Links to legacy rails**: Payments must still connect to SWIFT and national systems; Deutsche Bank's first euro payment had to bridge both.

## Physics limits

- **Final money still lives at central banks**: Tokenised deposits are claims on commercial banks; ultimate settlement in central-bank money still depends on RTGS systems and their opening hours.
- **A ledger can't remove credit risk alone**: Instant settlement removes timing risk, but each balance is only as safe as the settlement bank that holds it.

## How it works

### Fund: Banks hold tokenised deposits

Each currency has settlement banks (e.g. Deutsche Bank for euros); participants hold balances with them, recorded on the shared ledger.

### Pay: Debit and credit in one step

A cross-border payment moves balances on the ledger directly from sender bank to beneficiary bank, with finality, 24/7.

### Swap: Payment-versus-payment FX

In an FX trade a smart contract moves both currencies at once, so neither bank can pay out and fail to receive.

### Liquidity: Topping up after hours

With LSEG DiSH, banks will shift settlement liquidity between settlement banks at any hour instead of pre-funding nostro accounts.
