Frontier: [Computing](https://technooptimist.io/computing.md) · Field: Data-center CPUs · Company: [Fujitsu](https://technooptimist.io/companies/fujitsu.md)
Stage: Pilot (3 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-09-14, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Build a Japanese-designed data-centre CPU that runs AI inference and everyday server work on far fewer servers and less power than rival chips, so power-limited sites can run AI without GPUs.
Status: Evaluation samples shipping; global sales start November 2026, volume production in 2027.
Next milestone: Global CPU and server sales begin, target Nov 2026

- **Apr 2027**: Server shipments start in Japan and Europe
- **2029**: MONAKA-X successor on 1.4nm

## Most important updates

- **14 Sep 2026**: Fujitsu sets November 2026 global launch for the MONAKA CPU and a made-in-Japan MONAKA server. Fujitsu will start selling FUJITSU-MONAKA worldwide in November 2026, both as a standalone chip for cloud operators and server makers and inside its own MONAKA servers built at its Kasashima plant in Japan. - **24 Aug 2026**: Fujitsu details MONAKA at Hot Chips: 144 Arm cores on 2nm dies stacked over 5nm cache, samples shipping. At Hot Chips 2026 Fujitsu laid out MONAKA's design: four 36-core dies on TSMC's 2nm N2P bonded onto 5nm SRAM dies, with a 5nm I/O die in the centre. - **26 Feb 2026**: Broadcom ships first samples of Fujitsu's 144-core MONAKA CPU, built with its 3.5D chip-stacking platform. Broadcom revealed that Fujitsu's MONAKA server CPU is built on its 3.5D XDSiP platform, which bonds chips face to face for very fast die-to-die links, and that samples for Fujitsu shipped that week. ## Current obstacles

- **Unproven performance claims**: The 2x AI inference and half-the-power figures are Fujitsu's own estimates; test conditions were not disclosed and no independent benchmarks exist yet.
- **New stacking at volume**: MONAKA is among the first chips on Broadcom's 3.5D hybrid-bonded stacking; making such stacks reliably and cheaply in volume is still ahead.
- **Winning buyers from AMD and Intel**: It competes with EPYC and Xeon; Fujitsu must convince cloud operators and server makers that have never bought its CPUs.

## Physics limits

- **Memory bandwidth per core**: 144 cores share 12 DDR5 channels, about 500 GB/s in Fujitsu's own estimate, or roughly 3.5 GB/s per core. AI models that stream large weights run out of bandwidth before they run out of cores.
- **The power wall**: Every transistor switch costs energy that becomes heat. At 350–500 W per chip, cooling, not transistor count, sets how fast all 144 cores can run at once.

## How it works

### Stacking: Cores stacked on cache

Each 36-core 2nm die is bonded face to face onto a 5nm SRAM cache die with direct copper bonds, giving huge bandwidth over very short wires.

### Split nodes: Costly silicon only where it pays

Only the cores use expensive 2nm silicon, under 30% of the chip's area. Cache, I/O and memory control stay on cheaper, mature 5nm.

### AI: Matrix and vector instructions

SVE2 vector units plus new 8-bit (INT8, FP8) matrix instructions let the CPU run AI inference itself, without a separate accelerator.

### Security: Confidential computing

Arm CCA encrypts data in memory and walls it off even from the operating system and hypervisor, so cloud tenants can share one machine safely.
