Fremont, California maker of TMINI, a handheld robot for total knee replacement that works with implants from many manufacturers, unlike rivals tied to one company's knees. Privately held.

## In brief

- TMINI is an open platform: surgeons choose the implant; it covers about 70% of US knee implants by volume, including Stryker's Triathlon.
- 5,000th procedure in May 2026, five times the volume of a year earlier.
- Zimmer Biomet distributes TMINI with its Persona knee; up to $65M debt facility from Symbiotic Capital (July 2026).

## Programs

- [TMINI](https://technooptimist.io/robotics/tmini.md) (Robotics): Scaling; next: Commercial expansion in the US (2026). 5,000+ knee replacements; compatible with ~70% of US knee implants; cases up fivefold in a year.

## Technical approach

- **Handheld: A robot in the surgeon's hand**: A wireless handpiece compensates for the surgeon's hand motion to place pins on exactly planned planes, instead of a large floor-standing arm.
- **Open library: Any implant maker's knee**: Each implant model gets its own data module and FDA clearance, so hospitals keep their preferred implant supplier.
- **CT plan: Cuts planned in 3D beforehand**: A CT scan of the knee is turned into a 3D plan that sets where every bone cut goes before surgery starts.

## Open problems

- **Adding implants one clearance at a time** (partially solved): Every new implant needs its own data module and FDA 510(k); THINK has added makers such as Zimmer Biomet, Medacta, LINK and Maxx.
- **Path to profitability** (open): The company says new debt plus investor money should fully fund it to profitability; that depends on keeping case growth high.
