Grows Asparagopsis, a red seaweed that suppresses methane made in a cow's gut, in ponds in South Australia, and sells it as Methane Tamer, a feed supplement for feedlot cattle.

## In brief

- Opened the first commercial-scale Asparagopsis farm, the Louth Bay EcoPark, in Jan 2025.
- Methane Tamer is fed at 0.5% of the diet; company claims up to 90% less burped methane.
- Beef from Methane Tamer cattle has been on sale in South Australia since 2025.

## Programs

- [Methane Tamer & Louth Bay EcoPark](https://technooptimist.io/agriculture/methane-tamer.md) (Agriculture): Deploy; next: Expand to 100 ponds (45,000 cattle a day). EcoPark phase one (10 ponds, 80 t a year) running since Jan 2025; expansion to 100 ponds pending.

## Technical approach

- **Cultivation: Ponds, not tanks or sea ropes**: Seaweed grows in in-ground saltwater ponds under poly tunnels, using sunlight and passive heating instead of lit, climate-controlled tanks.
- **Product: Dried seaweed in a feed premix**: Harvested Asparagopsis is dried and formulated into Methane Tamer, blended into feedlot rations at about 0.5% of the daily mix.
- **Effect: Less methane from every animal**: Cattle fed the supplement burp out much less methane; CH4 Global guarantees at least a 70% cut through the product's shelf life.

## Open problems

- **Scaling seaweed supply** (open): Phase one makes about 80 t a year; supplying tens of thousands of cattle a day needs the planned 100 ponds.
- **Who pays for lower methane** (open): Feedlots need a buyer to cover the cost: a beef premium, carbon credits or retailer demand.
