Goal: Give airlines a twin-engine jet that carries 400-plus passengers on the longest routes while burning, Boeing claims, 20% less fuel per seat than the 777-300ER it replaces.
Status: In final FAA certification: 7 test jets, 4,800+ test hours; first delivery targeted for 2027.
Next milestone: 777-9 FAA type certification, target 2027

## Most important updates

- **Sep 2026**: Emirates' first 777-9 leaves final assembly in Everett ahead of painting. The first 777-9 for Emirates, the program's largest customer with 270 on order, rolled out of assembly in Everett in green primer. - **29 Jul 2026**: Seventh 777-9 test jet makes its first flight and will mainly fly ETOPS certification tests. A seventh 777-9 flight-test aircraft flew for about three hours from Boeing Field in Seattle. - **Jun 2026**: FAA approves TIA Phase 4B, opening the largest remaining block of 777-9 certification flights. The FAA granted Type Inspection Authorization Phase 4B for the 777-9, letting FAA pilots and engineers join flight tests for the largest remaining part of the certification campaign. - **29 Oct 2025**: Boeing delays first 777X delivery to 2027 and takes a $4.9 billion charge. Boeing pushed the first 777X delivery from 2026 to 2027 and booked a $4.9 billion charge in its third quarter. ## Current obstacles

- **ETOPS testing on the critical path**: Long over-water approval needs its own campaign on a seventh test jet; Boeing's CEO said it runs into 2027 and most customers want it before delivery.
- **Early-built jets need costly rework**: Emirates won't take about 10 early-build 777-9s, some from 2019, that need heavy changes to meet current standards; Boeing scrapped one unfinished airframe.
- **Engine-mount structure**: Cracked links tying the engines to the airframe grounded the test fleet for five months in 2024; the redesigned part has to hold through the rest of testing.

## Physics limits

- **A twin needs enormous engines**: A two-engine jet must still climb away on one engine after a failure at takeoff, so each engine is huge. Fan size is capped by ground clearance under the wing and by the weight and drag of the casing around it.
- **Wingspan versus airport gates**: Longer wings cut drag, but airports fix how wide a plane can be on the ground. Folding tips buy span in the air, but the hinge's weight eats part of the gain: the net fuel saving is projected nearer 12-13% than 20%.

## How it works

### Composite wing: A longer, slimmer carbon-fibre wing

Wing area grows from 437 to 517 m² and span to 71.8 m. A long, slender wing makes less drag for the same lift, the main lever on cruise fuel burn.

### Folding wingtips: Tips fold up at the gate

The outer 3.5 m of each wing hinges upward on the ground, cutting span to 64.8 m so the jet fits the same gates and taxiways as today's 777.

### GE9X engines: The largest airliner engines built

Each 3.35 m fan pushes a huge mass of air backwards fairly slowly, which wastes less energy than a small, fast jet. Rated about 110,000 lbf each.

### Certification: Proving it to the FAA phase by phase

FAA pilots fly the test jets in approved phases (TIAs). ETOPS, approval for long twin-engine flights far from airports, comes last.
