Frontier: [AI](https://technooptimist.io/ai.md) · Field: Weather models · Company: [WindBorne Systems](https://technooptimist.io/companies/windborne-systems.md)
Stage: Deploy (4 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-08-05, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Beat the best government forecasts by pairing an AI model with fresh data that nobody else has, measured by a fleet of balloons over the oceans and remote land where today's forecasts are weakest.
Status: WeatherMesh-6 out since June 2026: hourly forecasts, 3 km over Europe and the US.
Next milestone: Scale toward 10,000 balloons aloft

## Milestones

| Status | Milestone | Date | Slip |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Done | Series A to scale balloons and AI forecasts | 12 Jun 2024 | |
| Done | WeatherMesh-6: hourly runs, 3 km over Europe and the US | 1 Jun 2026 | |
| Done | Constellation passes 600 balloons aloft at once | Aug 2026 | |
| Current | Scale toward 10,000 balloons aloft | | |

## Most important updates

- **5 Aug 2026**: WindBorne raises $37M Series B as its balloon fleet passes 600 aloft. WindBorne raised an oversubscribed $37 million Series B co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, taking total funding past $62 million. - **1 Jun 2026**: WindBorne releases WeatherMesh-6, claiming lower error than ECMWF's forecasts. WindBorne launched WeatherMesh-6, which issues a new forecast every hour at about 25 km worldwide and 3 km over Europe and the continental US. - **12 Jun 2024**: WindBorne raises $15M Series A led by Khosla Ventures to scale its balloon fleet. WindBorne raised $15 million led by Khosla Ventures, with Footwork, Pear VC and Convective Capital joining. ## Current obstacles

- **Self-reported benchmarks**: The 38% claim covers July 2025 to March 2026 on WindBorne's own tests; outside researchers have not yet reproduced it.
- **Proving the balloon advantage**: AI forecasts from Google, ECMWF and NOAA run on public data; WindBorne must show its own data adds real accuracy.

## Physics limits

- **Chaos sets a horizon**: Small errors in the starting state grow until, around two weeks out, daily weather cannot be predicted by any model.
- **Balloons go where winds allow**: Altitude control picks among existing winds; a balloon cannot hold a fixed spot, so coverage depends on fleet size.

## How it works

### Measure: Balloons sample the sky for weeks

Each balloon climbs and sinks on command, measuring the air at many heights over 40+ days instead of a single 2-hour climb.

### Steer: Ride different winds

Winds blow in different directions at different heights; choosing an altitude lets a balloon head toward where data is missing.

### Forecast: AI model steps the weather forward

WeatherMesh learns from decades of past weather, then starts each run from the latest state including its balloon readings.

### Sell: Data and forecasts

Agencies buy the raw observations to improve their own models; traders and utilities buy the forecasts.

## Spec sheet

| Spec | WeatherMesh | Provenance |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Global resolution | 0.25° (about 25 km) | reported |
| Resolution, Europe and US | 3 km | reported |
| New forecast every | 1 hour | reported |
| Error vs ECMWF IFS (company test) | Up to 38% lower | reported |
| Balloons aloft at once | 600+ | reported |
| Balloon flight time | 40+ days | reported |

Provenance: reported = stated by the company; estimated = our estimate; sample = a sample figure.

## About WindBorne Systems

WindBorne builds long-flying weather balloons that steer by changing altitude and sells their data and its own AI forecasts (WeatherMesh) to weather agencies, militaries and energy traders.

- Bets that AI weather needs its own data: 600+ balloons aloft at once, sampling skies over oceans that few sensors reach.
- WeatherMesh-6 (June 2026) claims up to 38% lower error than ECMWF's flagship model; independent checks are pending.
- Raised a $37M Series B in Aug 2026 (Khosla, Galvanize); over $62M in total.
