Stage: Deploy (4 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2026-03-25, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Let anyone make an original, full song from an idea or a photo, built with the music industry and watermarked, so AI music adds to creativity instead of copying artists.
Status: Lyria 3 Pro (March 2026) makes 3-minute songs in Gemini; every track carries a SynthID watermark.

## Milestones

| Status | Milestone | Date | Slip |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Done | Lyria first introduced | 2023 | |
| Done | Lyria 3 in Gemini: 30-second tracks with lyrics | 18 Feb 2026 | |
| Done | Lyria 3 Pro: songs up to 3 minutes | 25 Mar 2026 | |

## Most important updates

- **25 Mar 2026**: Lyria 3 Pro brings full-length songs up to three minutes to Gemini. Google began rolling out Lyria 3 Pro, which extends tracks from 30 seconds to three minutes and lets users ask for intros, verses, choruses and bridges. - **18 Feb 2026**: Google brings Lyria 3 music generation to the Gemini app. Gemini users can now make 30-second songs with Google DeepMind's Lyria 3 by describing an idea or uploading a photo or video. ## Current obstacles

- **Rights and training data**: Labels are suing rivals over training on their catalogues; Google says it trained with partner agreements in mind.
- **Filters are not foolproof**: Google says its checks against existing songs may miss some close copies; users can report violations.

## Physics limits

- **Coherence over minutes**: Audio has tens of thousands of samples per second; keeping melody, rhythm and lyrics consistent across a whole song is hard.
- **Watermarks can be weakened**: Heavy editing, re-recording or compression can degrade embedded marks, so detection is a strong signal, not proof.

## How it works

### Prompt: Idea, photo or video in

Describe a genre, mood or memory, or upload an image; the model writes lyrics if you don't.

### Structure: Verses, chorus, bridge

Lyria 3 Pro follows song structure on request, holding melody and lyrics together for up to three minutes.

### Artist filter: Inspired by, not copied

Naming an artist is taken as a broad style hint; outputs are checked against existing content.

### Watermark: SynthID in the audio

An inaudible mark is embedded; Gemini can check an uploaded file for it.

## Spec sheet

| Spec | Lyria | Provenance |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Max track length | 3 minutes (Lyria 3 Pro) | reported |
| Launch languages | 8 | reported |
| Inputs | Text, photos, video | reported |
| Watermark | SynthID on every track | reported |

Provenance: reported = stated by the company; estimated = our estimate; sample = a sample figure.

## About Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind is Alphabet's AI lab, formed in 2023 from DeepMind and Google Brain. It builds the Gemini models and leads in AI for science. AlphaFold won a share of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

- Gemini 3 (Nov 2025) led many benchmarks. Gemini 3.5 Pro, announced in May 2026, is delayed.
- AlphaFold predicted structures for over 200 million proteins and won a share of the 2024 Chemistry Nobel.
- Google's own Ironwood TPU chip is used in-house and sold to outside labs, including Anthropic.
