Stage: Deploy (4 of 5: Research → Proto → Pilot → Deploy → Scaling)
Updated: last update 2025-09-15, facts checked 2026-10-11
Goal: Cut the methane cattle burp out, cheaply and at scale. Ruminant methane is about 30% of human-caused methane; a seaweed fed in tiny doses can suppress most of it if enough can be grown cheaply.
Status: EcoPark phase one (10 ponds, 80 t a year) running since Jan 2025; expansion to 100 ponds pending.
Next milestone: Expand to 100 ponds (45,000 cattle a day)

## Most important updates

- **15 Sep 2025**: South Australian butcher Windsor Meats sells the first Wagyu raised on CH4 Global's Methane Tamer. Windsor Meats began selling Wagyu beef from cattle fed Methane Tamer for 400 days. ([our story](https://technooptimist.io/stories/south-australian-butcher-windsor-meats-sells-the-first-wagyu-raised-on-a0124aa1.md) · [original source](https://ch4global.com/2025/09/15/real-world-progress-windsor-meats-sells-the-first-methane-tamed-wagyu-an-interview-with-sam-burt/))
- **29 Jan 2025**: CH4 Global begins production at the first commercial-scale Asparagopsis growing facility in South Australia. The first phase of CH4 Global's EcoPark at Louth Bay, South Australia, opened with ten 200,000-litre ponds producing more than 80 tonnes of Asparagopsis a year. - **1 Sep 2023**: CH4 Global raises US$29M to build its Asparagopsis EcoPark. CH4 Global raised US$29 million for the second phase of its development: building and validating its EcoPark, where the red seaweed Asparagopsis is grown and processed at low cost. ## Current obstacles

- **Growing enough seaweed**: 80 t a year covers a small herd; the 100-pond phase needed for 45,000 cattle a day has not been reported complete.
- **Paying for it**: Beef from treated cattle sells at a small premium in a few shops; wider uptake needs supermarkets or carbon payments.

## Physics limits

- **Works only while the animal eats it**: The effect lasts only as long as the supplement is in the daily feed. Feedlots can dose every animal, but grazing cattle on open range are hard to reach every day.
- **The cut depends on dose and product strength**: The company claims up to 90% but guarantees only 70% over the shelf life. The effect scales with how much active seaweed each animal eats, so supply quality and correct mixing matter.

## How it works

### Grow: Seaweed in covered ponds

Asparagopsis grows in in-ground saltwater ponds under poly tunnels, which hold the day's warmth overnight; sunlight replaces lamps.

### Process: Dried into a supplement

Harvested seaweed is dried and made into Methane Tamer; batches that miss the standard are composted.

### Feed: A pinch in every ration

Feedlots mix it in at about 0.5% of the daily feed, so a small amount of seaweed treats many animals.

### Effect: Less methane, same beef

Treated cattle burp out far less methane; butchers selling the beef report no difference in taste.

## About CH4 Global

Grows Asparagopsis, a red seaweed that suppresses methane made in a cow's gut, in ponds in South Australia, and sells it as Methane Tamer, a feed supplement for feedlot cattle.

- Opened the first commercial-scale Asparagopsis farm, the Louth Bay EcoPark, in Jan 2025.
- Methane Tamer is fed at 0.5% of the diet; company claims up to 90% less burped methane.
- Beef from Methane Tamer cattle has been on sale in South Australia since 2025.
